Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student, possesses the ability to see the spirits of the dead that doesn't hinder him from leading a regular life. However, his ordinary routine is disrupted when Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper, invades his room and warns him of the Hollows, malevolent spirits that consume souls. In the midst of their conversation, a Hollow attacks, and Ichigo foolishly attempts to fend it off. Rukia intervenes and is wounded. To defeat the enemy, Rukia shares a plan to transfer her powers to Ichigo, transferring the powers entirely when he accepts.
Now with his own Soul Reaper abilities, Ichigo recognizes his duty to eradicate Hollows and defend spirits, both living and dead. Ichigo's friends, Orihime and Yasutora, also discover their spiritual abilities and help him. However, the path that comes with becoming a Soul Reaper and entering the supernatural realm proves to be more complicated than anticipated.
